Changing the plan feels productive. Letting it work actually is.
The Urge to Change Something
If we’re not changing something, it can feel like we’re falling behind.
We look at our training and think: what can I improve? What can I tweak? What can I do better? That instinct feels responsible. It feels like we’re actively trying to make progress instead of just letting things happen.
And to be fair, that mindset is useful in the right context. We should care about improving. We should want to make smart decisions. We should be engaged in the process.
But there’s a point where that instinct turns into interference.
We start changing things not because they need to be changed, but because staying the same feels passive. It feels like we’re not doing enough. So we adjust the plan, shift the structure, add something new, or second-guess what was already working.
The change feels productive. Even when it isn’t.
Why That Feeling Is Misleading
The problem is that progress in training is not immediate.
We do the work today, but the benefit shows up later. Results always lag behind effort. That delay creates uncertainty. And when we feel that uncertainty, we try to solve it.
If a week feels flat, we assume something is wrong. If a workout doesn’t feel great, we question the structure. If progress isn’t obvious, we look for something to fix. The absence of immediate feedback makes us think the plan isn’t working.
But most of the time, nothing is wrong. We are just in the middle of the process.
Good training often feels uneventful while it’s working. It feels repetitive. It feels stable. It doesn’t constantly signal progress in a way that satisfies us day-to-day. So we mistake a lack of visible change for a lack of actual progress.
And we start changing things that didn’t need to be changed.
Optimization Interrupts Progress
Every time we change something, we interrupt the process that was already in motion.
Adaptation depends on repeated exposure to the same type of stress. When we constantly adjust volume, intensity, or routine, we never stay in one place long enough for that adaptation to fully occur.
We reset the process without realizing it.
It’s not that the changes are bad on their own. It’s that the frequency of change prevents anything from compounding. We move from one version of the plan to another before either has time to work.
So we stay busy. We stay engaged. We feel like we’re optimizing... but we’re not progressing. We’re restarting.
What Good Training Actually Looks Like
Effective training is less dynamic than most people expect.
It is not constant improvement. It is not constant adjustment. It is not a series of upgrades. It's just repetition.
We hold volume steady long enough to own it. We repeat similar sessions until they feel more controlled. We let the body adapt at its own pace instead of trying to accelerate it through constant change. This is where progress actually comes from.
Not from doing something new, but from doing the right thing enough times for it to matter.
The Real Skill: Knowing When Not to Change Anything
Sometimes, the most productive decision is to not change stuff.
If the plan is sound, if the structure is stable, and if we are executing consistently, then the best move is often to continue. Not to tweak. Not to optimize. Not to search for a better version. Just to let it work.
It requires confidence. It requires patience. It requires the ability to tolerate the discomfort of not constantly changing something. It requires trusting that repetition, not novelty, is what drives progress.
This is a skill we develop over time. Build your plan, stick to it, and results will follow.

We don’t need to constantly improve the plan. We need to give a good plan enough time to work.
Changing things feels productive. It satisfies the need to act. But progress does not come from constant adjustment. It comes from repeated execution under a stable structure.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is nothing new at all.
